More than one hundred and thirty boats ready to fish shrimp

With the traditional firing of sparklers, authorities of the National Government announced the start of the departure of more than one hundred and thirty boats to the sea. With this, the first closing of the shrimp ban period in the whole country is over.
The event that took place at noon today at the International port of Vacamonte, district of Arraiján, province of Panama Oeste, had the participation of the Minister of Agricultural Development, Augusto Valderrama, who was accompanied by the Administrator and Deputy General Administrator of the Aquatic Resources Authority of Panama (ARAP), Flor Torrijos and Hamed Tuñón, and the Technical Secretary of the Agricultural Cabinet, Blanca Gómez, among other authorities.
Valderrama pointed out that this economic activity employs more than 500 sailors who go to sea in about 130 ships. "Today 100 ships leave, and during the next days another 30 will go. While in the district of Chepo ten ships will depart and in the province of Chiriquí other ships," he said.
He stressed that, for them, as representative of the President of the Republic Laurentino Cortizo Cohen, they are proud to know that they are reactivating an important economic activity, the second in terms of exports that has generated some 72 million balboas, despite the pandemic.
He added that this is an activity that has a great future in the country because it has more than 300 thousand kilometers of coasts, sea in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, where a lot of employment and wealth can be generated with this renewable natural resource.
Valderrama congratulated all the companies of the nation's marine and aquaculture industry, since after 61 years and thanks to the work of this activity, where entrepreneurs, workers, fishermen participate and above all with the support of the ARAP, being their Director Flor Torrijos, the approval of the new Fishing Law was achieved, which has modernized the regulations of this activity, which is important, so that it is projected to the world of fishing, in a responsible, serious, friendly way and above all that respects international standards of conservation of marine species that are under protection.

Meanwhile Torrijos said that they leave today with great faith and hope because ARAP has guaranteed that all the ships that set sail today have the satellite monitoring system and the turtle explorer device, guaranteeing that it is a certified activity to conserve the species. "We will continue to export to all countries that require this certification, including the United States and the European Union," he specified.
He added that the Panamanian people can be proud of this activity and the Panamanian shrimp fleet that is certified and has met all the international requirements today to carry out this activity in a responsible manner.

She emphasized that all fishing and aquaculture represent 139 million balboas and that 70% of this product goes to the European Union and the United States.
Shrimp closures are carried out twice a year to safeguard the marine species, and during this period the capture of marine shrimp of any species is strictly prohibited throughout the Republic of Panama, with the purpose of giving the species the opportunity to reproduce. thus guaranteeing sustainability of this important fishing resource.
