Challenging Weather Affects Fishing Week in the North Sea: Foreign Vessels Dominate Herring Catches
Poor weather in the North Sea has challenged fishing activity over the past week, impacting the total catch volumes. Despite the difficult conditions, foreign vessels accounted for the largest catches of North Sea herring, while the fisheries for mackerel and blue whiting yielded more moderate results.

A total of seven vessels—four Norwegian and three foreign—fished for North Sea herring last week, with a total reported volume of 4,811 tonnes. The foreign boats dominated, with catches ranging from 670 to 1,500 tonnes, mainly caught in the UK zone. Smaller catches were, however, registered in the Norwegian zone along the coast.

The mackerel fishery has been moderate, with good occurrences of mackerel along the Møre coast. Activity has also taken place along the West Coast and southwards towards Stavanger. The sizes of the mackerel varied from 260 to 400 grams, with a total of 432 tonnes reported.

Two vessels caught a total of 840 tonnes of blue whiting along the edge, with the catch being delivered for the production of fishmeal and oil.

The fishing for sprat was also hampered by the poor weather, but with an improved forecast, seven boats are now in the field hoping for a better outcome this week.
