Starting last Friday, and for 72 days, until January 19, 2019, the second closure period for tuna fishing will be effective, reported the Ministry of Production, Foreign Trade and Investment.
The measure is implemented to the 53 tuna vessels, with a purse seine net, of more than 182 metric tons of carrying capacity, which undertook to stop their activities in order to comply with the conservation measure.

The trolling vessels used for sport fishing, and the purse seiners belonging to Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) capacity types 1 to 3 (182 metric tons or less carrying capacity), are not subject to this measure.

While the closure is in force, the affected vessels must remain in the ports, and the landings and transshipments of tuna or by-products that have been positively identified as coming from fishing activities that contravene these measures are prohibited, pursuant to Resolution C- 17-02 adopted by the IATTC in Mexico.
Ecuador is the second country in the world in terms of tuna catches. Between 2014 and 2017, fishing reached an annual average of 280,000 metric tons, placing the country in the first place in the eastern Pacific, with a 45.5 per cent share, according to the IATTC data.
