The Peruvian government has announced the launch of a new campaign under the national programme "Let’s eat fish" in order to help reduce levels of overweight and obesity among the Peruvian population.
This is "The Fishing Caravan", an educational campaign to promote healthy eating attached to sports that will be started this Friday on the beaches of Lima and Callao.
Overweight and obesity in Peru are currently affecting about 30 per cent of children aged 5-9 years old, 39 per cent of those aged 20 to 29, and nearly 70 per cent of adults between 30 and 59, according to the report The nutritional status in Peru by life stages, 2012-2013 by the National Institute of Health (INS).
"The problems of overweight and obesity are related to many factors, but it has been found that they are more associated with eating habits and lifestyle. These habits can generally be modified through various strategies such as educational campaigns," explains the nutritionist of the National Programme "Let’s eat fish", Liliana Vargas.
The educational campaign "The Fisheries Caravan" will offer citizens live cooking demonstrations of healthy nutritional preparations and talks linked to sports.
"This is a didactic, experiential and recreational activity, where the public is given the opportunity to learn to adopt healthy lifestyles with an emphasis on the benefits of eating fish," Vargas said.
In total, this summer 2016, the Ministry of Production will hold on weekends 12 fishing caravans on the beaches of Lima and Callao.
