The fishermen of Magallanes will be able to continue catching king crab until December 10, in an extraordinary way, during 2016. This decision was taken after the Undersecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture (SUBPESCA) received the request of the Crab Fishery Management Committee, which sought to lengthen the king crab season.
The extension of the season implies that there is a modification of the resource ban so the case was analyzed deeply by the Undersecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture, who approved the committee’s request. Besides, it was necessary for the Minister of Economy to sign it, since it was a decree.
Exempt Decree No. 966, dated November 29 2016, stipulates that the biological ban will apply for the year 2016 from December 11, 2016. It should be remembered that this closure concludes on June 30 of each year in the Region of Magallanes.
The proposal made by representatives of the artisanal fishing sector in the King Crab Fishery Management Committee was born from a request from the artisanal fishermen themselves, as a result of the decrease in landings caused mainly by the bad climatic conditions prevailing in the area in the last month, generating great economic impact in the sector. After a long and intense discussion, considering the resource sustainability as a priority, the committee decided to make the petition to the Undersecretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture.
Committee chairperson Alejandro Karstegl mentioned that "this body is an advisory body of the Undersecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture, which in this case provided the background information that allowed for a comprehensive analysis to be able to modify only the king crab seasonal ban in the region for this year, justifying it from the experience of the fishermen in the fishing zone and highlighting the economic and social importance of the activity," he said.
The next CMCC session will be held in Punta Arenas on December 15 and 16. This committee, unprecedented in Chile, is financed by the Regional Government through the Technical Transfer and Training Program for the Sustainable Development of the Artisanal Fishing Sector, Magallanes and Chilean Antarctic.
