SERNAPESCA agrees collaboration with Norway’s sanitary authority and veterinary institute

The National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (SERNAPESCA) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Norwegian Food Safety Authority (Mattilsynet), which is the equivalent entity in the Scandinavian country, and with the Norwegian Veterinary Institute (NVI).

The agreement, signed in the framework of international fair AquaSur 2018, taking place this week in Puerto Montt, aims to exchange information on animal health issues and food safety of fisheries and aquaculture, share experiences and generate instances of bilateral assistance and cooperate in research and development, among others.

SERNAPESCA national director Alicia Gallardo explained that this new MoU complements an agreement established three years ago, and stressed the importance of this collaboration.

"We are the main salmon-producing world powers, and we both have the same challenges, along with Scotland and Canada, so we have the responsibility to feed the world by 2050 with the growth of the population, and an alternative solution is through aquaculture," she said.

Regarding the issues that will be addressed together, Gallardo stressed that the prevention of antimicrobial resistance is one of the topics included in this agreement, "to be able to work together and include it in Chile's national plan, adding the successful Norwegian experience in this issue".

Mattilsynet animal health chief Kristina Landsverk also valued the settlement of the document because it considers it will serve to continue building competencies that allow better aquaculture management and to also address future challenges for the sector, such as antimicrobial resistance.

For her part, Norwegian ambassador in Chile Beate Stiro stressed that AquaSur fair was chosen as the venue to celebrate this agreement, which will deepen relations between the two countries and work together to improve the health of their fish.
