Fishing and aquaculture export sector grows almost 11pc in January

Fishing and aquaculture product exports generated USD 717.6 million in revenue in January, which represents an increase of 10.9 per cent over the first month of 2017. This figure is also higher than the average of the 2013-2017 five-year period, by 34.4 per cent.
The volume exported was 124.8 million tonnes, a result that implies an increase of 20.3 per cent year-on-year and 11.4 per cent when compared to the average of the 2013-2017 five-year period, informed the Subsecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture.
The main production lines show diverse results compared to January 2017. On the one hand, canned volumes grew by 74.6 per cent thanks to the increase in shipments to Spain, Venezuela and Singapore (43.4 per cent of the total volume, 258 per cent increase).
Similarly, sales of fishmeal and fish oil increased, both by 73.8 per cent. In the first case, it is explained by the largest shipments to the United States, China and South Korea (62.1 per cent of the total volume, 126 per cent increase). In the second case, it was due to the largest shipments to Belgium, Japan and the United States (30.7 per cent of the total volume, 169 per cent increase).
On the contrary, exports of dried seaweed decreased by 35.6 per cent.
The structure of participation in relation to the volume exported was led by the frozen line, which represents 57.0 per cent of the total, followed in a smaller proportion by the refrigerated and fishmeal lines, with 18.1 per cent and a 11.6 per cent, respectively.
The FOB price in the frozen processed line shows a reduction of 3.2 per cent along with the growth of 11.4 per cent in the volumes exported in the same period of analysis.
The ratio of the average FOB prices between the capture and aquaculture sector was 1: 2.3, while the products associated with the capture sector reached an average of 2.9 USD/kg, those related to the aquaculture sector reached an average FOB price of 6.7 USD/kg.
It should be noted that the prices of the capture sector rose by 3.5 per cent while those associated with harvests fell by 9.7 per cent, in relation to the year 2017.
Exports from the capture subsector recorded a total of USD 92.7 million in January 2018, 21.5 per cent higher than in the same period of the previous year. This value represented 12.9 per cent of the total value of fish and aquaculture exports.
In terms of volume, 31,600 tonnes are recorded, 17.4 per cent more than in January 2017.
The structure in terms of volume exported is headed by frozen products (35.3 per cent), fishmeal (32.8 per cent) and dried seaweed (17.0 per cent). The main lines in value of the subsector, as in volume, are frozen products (48.9 per cent), fishmeal (17.7 per cent) and dried seaweed drying (9.7 per cent).
Exports from the aquaculture subsector accounted for 87.1 per cent of the value and 74.7 per cent of the total volume exported in January 2018. USD 624.8 million was obtained from the sale of about 93,100 tonnes, figures representing an increase of 9.5 per cent in terms of value and 21.3 per cent in terms of volume, with respect to that reported in January 2017.
The Atlantic salmon is the main protagonist of the subsector, representing 55.9 per cent of the value. The income generated by this resource experienced an interannual increase of 19.6 per cent, basically due to a higher volume, given that the price fell 16.6 per cent.
