New HMRC figures have shown that Scottish salmon is the UK’s biggest fresh food export but the sector is facing continued challenges following Covid and Brexit.
International sales of Scottish salmon were valued at £280million in the first half of 2022, with France accounting for more than half of the total. However, this was down by around 8 per cent compared to 2021, across both EU sales and non-EU sales.
The closure measure of the 87 fishing zones is going to generate more problems than those relating to the bottom trawling fleets and others to which the measure is being applied. In fact, the shipowners of Ondarroa have described the closure of vulnerable marine ecosystems (VME, in English) as a "hammer blow", as ordered by the EU Commission. According to Kiko Marin, from the Ondarroa Producers Organization, «a good part of the areas that are closed are in the cliffs (usual fishing areas for fixed gear vessels, such as longliners and flyers.
Logista, one of the largest logistics operators in southern Europe, announces the acquisition of 100%, for 51 million euros, of the refrigerated and frozen food transport and logistics activity spun off from the Carbó Collbatallé Group, which will continue to hold the exploitation of its patrimonial activity.
Through this purchase, Logista reinforces the catalog of services it offers its customers, by "incorporating complementary capabilities in controlled temperature, fundamentally in the frozen range.

Mowi is appealing to the Scottish Government over the refusal of planning permission for expansion at its farm on Loch Hourn, a sea loch on Scotland’s west coast.
The salmon producer had applied for permission to add another cage and increase biomass at the site by 10%, to 2,750 tonnes, but in June the Highland Council’s Northern Planning committee, in Dingwall, voted by a narrow margin against the application.

A woman’s mercury level during pregnancy is unlikely to have an adverse effect on the development of the child provided that the mother eats fish, according to a new University of Bristol-led study.
The findings, which drew together analyses on over 4,131 pregnant mothers from the Children of the 90s study in the UK, with similar detailed studies in the Seychelles, are published in NeuroToxicology.
A company that uses a product extracted from shellfish exoskeletons to make a green alternative to expanded polystyrene (EPS) packaging has been shortlisted for an award by the Global Seafood Alliance (GSA).
California-based Cruz Foam uses chitosan – a refined version of chitin, the biopolymer found in crustacean shells - to make its biodegradable EPS alternative.

The Chilean Salmon Council, a guild made up of AquaChile, Australis, Cermaq, Mowi and Salmones Aysén, says the number of workers they employed in Q2 2022 has increased by nearly 6 percent, or 918 people, over Q2 2021.
“The different figures in the report show an improvement in the generation of employment by salmon farming, compatible with the rise in exports of Chilean salmon to the world,” says Joanna Davidovich, executive director of the Salmon Council.

Should the appeal be successful it would grant permission for an additional fish pen to be installed together with an increase in the farms production capacity by 10 percent.
“After careful consideration we have concluded there are strong evidence-based grounds to contest the reasons for refusal and, in accordance with the statutory provision, we intend to appeal against the decision,” said Stephen MacIntyre, head of environment at Mowi Scotland, in a press release.
