Today Gonzalo Pereira Puchy assumes as Executive Director of the Fisheries Development Institute (IFOP). He is a lawyer from the Catholic University of Valparaíso, holds a diploma in International Relations from the University of Chile and a Master's in Law from the PUCV.

With extensive experience in management positions, he has served as Head of the Legal Department in the National Fisheries Service, National Director of Customs, Secretary General of the CPPS and Executive Secretary of the Pacific Coastal Marine Action Plan.

He was currently working as Head of the Fisheries Development Division of the Undersecretary of Fisheries.

Aquaculture UK, the largest Aquaculture fair in the United Kingdom, received for the first time a delegation of Chilean companies from the Los Lagos Region, which provide services to the Chilean salmon and trout production industry, which, with the support of ProChile, advance in their internationalization.

The commercial director of ProChile in the United Kingdom, Nicolás Poblete, highlighted that “Chile and Scotland are world leaders in the aquaculture industry.

Barramundi Group Australia (BGA) has announced a 10-year plan to expand its production capacity to 30,000 tonnes.

The $350 million (£197 million) expansion, off the remote Kimberley coast in Western Australia, will create 350 to 400 direct jobs, as well as local business opportunities for the region, said the company. Barramundi Group Australia, the trading name of Marine Produce Australia, has been collaborating with environmental consultants for several years to develop a strategy to grow production in the region over the next decade.

The four federations representing England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland recently met with Fisheries Minister, Victoria Prentis MP to underline the crisis engulfing the fishing industry caused by the high cost of fuel.

The federations emphasised that fuel costs are currently at a level that jeopardises the viability of parts of the fleet. This has been offset - for the time being – to some degree by high fish prices, but the industry is caught in an inherently unstable and fragile balance.

Europêche tuna group slams report accusing the EU fleet of illegal fishing in the Indian Ocean

As per EU, Seychelles and Mauritius fisheries control processes, catches declared in logbooks by fishers are collected, crosschecked, by national scientific institutes with VMS (vessel monitoring system), the official fisheries positioning control tool, transmitted to the flag states and verified by their control services, sent to the EU authorities and provided to IOTC’s Secretariat and Compliance Committee

Historically large price gap.

Norway’s largest salmon buyer, Poland, is not known for paying too much for the fish. The large Polish processing plants run high volumes and have a tough cost focus. They also have extensive use of long-term fixed-price contracts.

The latter is a key reason why Poland paid €7.8 per kilo (delivered the Norwegian border) for salmon last week – well below the average price of €9.5, according to export statistics from the Norwegian Seafood Council.

The EU-27’s total organic aquaculture production reached a level of around 74,032 tonnes in 2020 and accounted for 6.4% of the region’s total farmed output, according to a new report from the European Commission’s European Market Observatory for Fisheries and Aquaculture Products (EUMOFA).

EUMOFA’s “Organic Aquaculture in the EU” study states that production has increased by 60% compared to 2015 (46,341 tonnes), mainly due to a growth in organic mussel production.

The U.K. government’s intention to introduce new legislation that makes swift changes to the post-Brexit rules surrounding the checking of goods at the Irish border has drawn fire from Scotland’s seafood industry, particularly the farmed salmon sector.

U.K. Foreign Secretary Liz Truss told the House of Commons on 17 May that the Northern Ireland Protocol, introduced in 2021, had caused unforeseen problems, including “unnecessary bureaucracy” for goods moving between Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

The Shtandart, a replica of the 18th-century frigate of Russian Tsar Peter I the Great, has been anchored since this afternoon in the Baiona marina. Its presence under the Russian flag has not gone unnoticed in the town due to misgivings about the invasion of Ukraine and the restrictions that have been imposed, also in maritime traffic, but it is not the first time that this 34.5-meter sailboat of length by 6.9 meters of breadth anchors in the estuary. She is a ship that acts as a school ship, in which a crew made up of students and sailors of different nationalities navigates.

The Government's star measure in fisheries matters, in development since 2020, has materialized. The Council of Ministers has approved the draft Law on Sustainable Fishing and Fisheries Research that will update the regulation in force since 2001 with the aim of strengthening the triple, economic, social and environmental sustainability of fishing in Spain. The norm establishes new criteria for the distribution of quotas in order to optimize their use; commitment to strengthening scientific knowledge through the application of an ecosystem approach; and establish new measures of a social nature aimed at groups such as rederas and shellfish gatherers, as some of the key measures.
