Eco-friendly, Biodegradable and Edible Seaweed Packaging
(INDONESIA, 12/14/2017)
Indonesia´s startup Evoware wants to change India’s reputation in terms of plastic waste. The company which makes cups and other containers from farmed seaweed free of chemical has developed an alternative to plastic cups: seaweed-based cup.
Founded by David Christian, Edwin Aldrin, Noryawati Mulyono, Benyamin Gunawan, and Surianto, the Jakarta´s based company is relying on its biodegradable alternative to plastic packaging to reduce contamination of the environment.

Evoware´s products are eco- friendly, biodegradable or even edible and healthy for the body. The company uses seaweed as its raw material, and its impact is not just on the environment but also on the livelihood of seaweed farmers. In order to achieve that, Evoware has always put in its heart the two core values: Innovation and Collaboration.
Evoware´s eco-solutions for plastic waste problems help to increase the livelihood of Indonesia’s seaweed farmers.
“We want to create a cleaner world by stopping plastic waste from the root,” says David Christian. Indonesia is the world’s second biggest plastic waste contributor to the ocean, 90% of plastic waste go into the ocean; 70% of that waste comes from food and beverage packaging and 25% of fish in Indonesian market are contaminated by plastic. In Indonesia a large volume of seaweed production is not used or is in oversupply and according to the company, most seaweed farmers are poor due to a long marketing chain and loan sharks. At present, 5 of the 6 poorest provinces in Indonesia are producing seaweed. “Our mission is to create innovative solutions from seaweed to solve plastic waste issue, while increasing the livelihood of Indonesia´s seaweed farmers”.
Evoware´s seaweed-based packaging patent has been granted and it has received halal and safety guarantee certificate.

About Evoware
Evoware is a product and service brand which bring out the value of eco-friendly and innovation to Indonesia's urban people. Through Evoware's product, people can become more aware of their surroundings and live with sustainability.
Evoware collaborates with local seaweed farmers to provide best quality seaweed for its products.
Evoware has created an edible alternative to the commonly used multi-layered plastic sachet. It manufactures the material directly from plant matter, making it not only edible but also nutritious. You can literally eat your burger with the wrapping still on, or dissolve your coffee granules along with their sachet in hot water and drink it. In addition, Evoware has designed a version, made using damar resin from South Asian fig trees, that holds liquids, creating readily compostable packaging for personal care products and medical supplies.
Evoware uses seaweed without chemical additives in applications where its ability to dissolve in hot water or be eaten adds functionality and value. Among unaltered biomaterials, seaweed has one of the best mechanical properties while still being energy efficient and very economical. In addition, its cultivation does not need land acquisition or deforestation as is often the case when land-based plants are used to provide bio-sourced materials.
