Nissui supports tuna conservation commitment encouraged by WWF
(JAPAN, 12/20/2016)
Nippon Suisan Kaisha, Ltd. (Nissui) informed that it has joined the Japanese firms signing "Pacific Bluefin Tuna Conservation Pledge," encouraged by WWF Japan to support the conservation and sustainable use of the bluefin tuna stock across the Pacific Ocean.
Through this commitment, Nissui makes its intention clear to promote further global agreement in regard to the management of the tuna stocks in the Pacific Ocean together with other Japanese companies supporting this position.
Apart from Nissui, the other fishing companies from Japan that support the pledge proposed by WWF include: Co-op Miral, Daichi Wo Mamoru Kai, Kamewa Shoten Co. ltd, Marubeni Corporation, Yamasa Wakiguchi Tuna Company.
“As responsible companies based in Japan, we promote to sustain livelihoods and to minimize environmental impacts when providing highly qualified seafood to the market. Then, we are making effort not to treat any seafood products from IUU (illegal, unreported and unregulated) sources by establishing the traceability,” pointed out the text of the signed pledge.
The statement reveals that the Pacific bluefin tuna stock remains near the historic low and the sustainability of the stock in the future is a concern. And it stresses that the Pacific bluefin tuna stock contributes to employment and economy in Pacific coastal countries including Japan and it plays a key role as one of the top predators in the Pacific Ocean marine ecosystem.
In this context, "to build a future in which humans live in harmony with nature," the signing firms are convinced that both an emergency rule and a long-term recovery plan of the Pacific bluefin tuna stock based on the best available science and precautionary approach will be adopted.
“We pledge to support these measures so that the Pacific Bluefin tuna stock across the Pacific Ocean will be steadily recovering,” the statement concludes.
