Nueva Pescanova R&D centre to position Galicia as world aquaculture leader
(SPAIN, 10/27/2016)
Nueva Pescanova will build a new research and development centre engaged in aquaculture, which, according to the company, will be the most important private facility of its kind in Spain and one of the three largest in Europe.
The new centre, called Pescanova BioMarine Centre, will require an investment of EUR 4.5 million and will place Galicia as an international leader in research of new marine species.
Company sources told EFE that this new R + D + i centre is part of "the group's expansion strategy to consolidate markets and projects."
Nueva Pescanova considers this business segment, which now accounts for one third of its total turnover, is key to the future of the company.
The centre will be built on the premises that the company has in El Grove, with an area of 4,000 square meters, and there research will be conducted so as to improve the species that the group currently farms worldwide: turbot, vannamei shrimp and tilapia.
In addition, aspects related to genetics, nutrition, health and management will be studied as well as new species that may be of interest to Nueva Pescanova.
