With new equilibrium in frozen product market, Vigo maintains its leadership
(SPAIN, 7/8/2014)
The Galician port of Vigo maintains its leadership at national level in frozen seafood trade despite the crisis being faced by several major companies in the sector, such as Pescanova, Freiremar and Vieira.
According to a ranking of the main companies operating in this sector in Spain, developed by Alimarket, the difficult situation these three groups are experiencing rebalances the market and benefits operators such as Iberconsa, Marfrío and Pescapuerta.
These three firms increased their sales through the internationalization and growth of commercial networks.
Out of the 10 companies that lead the ranking issued by Alimarket, eight are from Vigo, the Galician newspaper Faro de Vigo stresses.
The report indicates that Pescanova changed from moving 150,000 tonnes of the product in 2012 to 130,000 tonnes a year later (13.3 per cent lower), when it entered the creditors’ meeting phase.
And the results of this exercise will be even lower due to the loss of key subsidiaries such as PescaChile, Acuinova and Pesca Austral, which together billed more than EUR 200 million and contributed 30 per cent of the EBITDA of the business group.
Until a while ago, PescaChile – with a hake fishing quota of 47 per cent in Chilean waters -- sold 90 per cent of its production to Pescanova’s companies.
Meanwhile, Freiremar changed from a production of 35,000 tonnes in 2012 to just 13,000 tonnes in 2013. These volumes account for a significant decrease from 2007, when it had reached 65,000 tonnes.
With liabilities of around EUR 151 million, the company has been undergoing creditors’ meeting phase since last December and has already implemented a Employment Regulation File (ERE) for 322 workers, 101 of whom belonged to the delegation in Vigo.
On the other hand, Vieira traded 9,000 tonnes in 2013, compared with 10,000 tonnes in 2012 and 40,000 tonnes in 2007. This company overcame the creditors’ meeting phase late last year, after a deep restructuring that involved the liquidation of companies, the sale of subsidiaries and personnel adjustments.
Parallel to these falls, Iberconsa achieved an increase in sales, from 45,000 tonnes to 50,000 tonnes, and expanded its operations with purchases in Namibia and Argentina, adds Alimarket in its report.
Marfrío, meanwhile, made new investments in Peru in 2013 and plans further ones in Galicia.
