Two companies concentrate requests for salmon farming concessions in Magallanes

Two salmon companies presented the greater part of applications for aquaculture concessions in the Magallanes region.
The companies are Friosur and Trusal, which together represent around 36 per cent of the total, said the Undersecretary of Fisheries (Subpesca).
The final waterfront zoning plan was adopted after the closure of processes for Magellanes, Tierra del Fuego and Antarctica.
In addition to Friosur and Trusal, Cultivos Marinos Chiloé, Mainstream and Salmones Alpen are also interested in obtaining licenses for salmon farming.
A total of 9.2 per cent of the applications correspond to Friosur and in second place came Trusal, with 8.5 per cent.
Further down in eighth place, is Nova Austral with 60 concessions sought, while Multiexport submitted 51 applications.
At number 14 on the list is Riverfish, with 42 grants awaiting approval by the authorities.
According to official data, up to 3 January, a total of 1,600 applications were studied, of which 200 have the approval of the authorities, reports Diario Financiero.
From November, Última Esperanza will be the area that receives the most concessions.
According to the director of Subpesca in Magallanes, Ricardo Radebach, "13 areas suitable for aquaculture development remain, being that Última Esperanza will receive more centers. Tierra del Fuego was not applicable to the development of concessions."
For the official, Magallanes is not yet ready to receive as many salmon centres. In this regard, he explained that no one associated with salmon farming technology will be able to provide the necessary services such as laboratories for certification of viruses.
The regional secretary of the Ministry of Economy, Pablo Ihnen, estimated that the recovery of the salmon industry in Magallanes could generate revenues of between USD 300 million and USD 400 million and a production of 40,000 tonnes of salmon in 2014.
