Friosur vice president backs individual quotas
(CHILE, 8/3/2010)
The president of the Federation of Fisheries Industries of South Austral (Fipes), Carlos Vial, spoke in favour of the perpetuity of the current system of allocating fishing quotas.
Vial, who is also vice president of Friosur SA, considered it necessary to improve the transfer of quotas to achieve a more efficient system and see how "technically the conditions are created for the sector to develop and ensure that production systems operate."
For the Friosur executive, no other system exists like the present one "that proves to be better."
He also believes that it is important to facilitate the transfer of quotas since "as it creates an active market, it generates unexpected development and behaviour of different industry players in terms of confidence and wealth," Diario Financiero reports.
"That's what to look for, because clearly, especially in the centre and south of the country, the importance of fisheries to economic and social development is fundamental," Vial said.
While he admitted that every fishery in the country has a different situation, he stressed that "what must be promoted here is a boost in fishing, because today there is much at stake."
Moreover, the businessman explained that a key issue in the salmon farming sector is the definition of neighbourhoods and their operation.
He also supported that the cost of this process is borne by the companies. "We can no longer be organized in a way that something like the infectious salmon anaemia (ISA) virus can flourish with the ease that it did," he said.
"There has been much talk about distance between concessions, but we must speak of the concept of neighborhood, because with the new practices, one should operate in accordance with neighbours and, in that there is no turning back and no other option," added Friosur businessman.
