El Golfo wagers on trout production

The company Pesquera El Golfo is focusing its efforts on rainbow trout production and halting that of Atlantic salmon (Salmon salar).
Firm executives explain that although the rainbow trout has margins inferior to salmon, it is a relatively more stable species.
This corporate redefinition occurred following the crisis spurred by infectious salmon anaemia (ISA) virus outbreaks that have surfaced in several domestic centres since 2007.
According to the general manager of El Golfo, Alberto Romero, 4 of the company's 11 farming centres are operational – but only with trout biomass. This year they plan on reaching a production output of nearly 13,000 tonnes.
"Because of the losses that the ISA matter generated in our production of salar, whether or not we will reincorporate it in the future is currently being analysed. For now, we have decided to dedicate ourselves to trout, that is, to maintain operations,” Romero indicated.
The company began working with salmon in 2007 in 11 operating centres, but ISA virus outbreaks caused a decline in activity.
"Facing this, management is questioning when to resume this adventure again. It is a business of risk where the margins can be interesting when everything comes out well. However, any effect of nature, be it mortalities, algae bloom, even the sanitary theme itself, makes the decision to once again make that great leap [depend on] thorough evaluation,” the executive maintained.
In spite of this course change forced by the present situation of Chile's salmon industry, Romero clarified that the company is diversifying its production with several species, like jack mackerel, sardine, hake, other salmonids and mussels.
Recently, national salmon farming managed to survive a critical 2009 – due to complications caused by the ISA virus and its sanitary, environmental and labour consequences – and is on its way to reclaiming better productive levels.
In February 2010 some 3.6 million smolts were sown, whereas the figure reached only 600,000 smolts in June 2009.
