1.1 Japan
Northern bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) Southern bluefin tuna (Thunnus maccoyii)
Prices
The average price at Japan Customs of frozen bluefin (HS 030345000 and 030346000) in May was JPY 3,087/kg, up 97% on that of April but down 50% on that of May 2014. In the first five months the average was JPY 1,733/kg, down 3% on that of the same period last year.

Markets
In the month analysed, imports reached 69 tonnes of frozen bluefin, worth JPY 213 million at Japanese Customs, down 90% in volume and 81% in value on those of the previous month and down 48% and 22% respectively on those of May 2014.

During the period, imports reached 3,315 tonnes, worth JPY 5,837 million, up 7% in volume and 5% in value on those of the previous year.

Taiwan was the main origin of Japanese imports of frozen southern bluefin, with 289 tonnes. Mexico was the main origin of Japanese imports of frozen northern bluefin, with 2,443 tonnes.

2.1 European Union
Landed volumes
Spain
Incoming volumes declined in the case of frozen and fresh albacore and frozen swordfish on Mercamadrid during week 28. Those of frozen shortfin mako, frozen blue shark, fresh shortfin mako and fresh swordfish increased.

Italy
At Italian ports, during week 28, volumes of the all species analysed declined. The most important decline was reported by swordfish. Aci Trezza was the main port of these landed volumes.

Prices
Prices of skipjack on Bangkok remained at USD 1,700/t.
Spain
In Spain the price of skipjack also stayed at EUR 1,500/t EXW Spain, and so did that of yellowfin tuna at EUR 1,750/t EXW Spain, due to a still low demand in the canning sector.

Prices have increased in the case of head-on fresh albacore and fresh swordfish on Mercamadrid during week 28. Those for the rest of the species remained stable.

Italy
On Italian first-sale markets the prices of tunid and squaliform species increased because of a drop in supplies.
