This report focuses on catch volumes of tuna, shark and swordfish in the European Union and American waters. It also highlights prices, inventories, markets, imports and exports of species detailed in the following index.

Landed volumes

Spain

On Mercabarna, in August, supplies have declined mainly in fresh tuna, fresh swordfish, frozen shortfin mako, fresh tope shark and fresh northern albacore. There were some rises in frozen whole tope shark, fresh shortfin mako and fresh swordfish.

In the case of tunid and squaliform species, August registered a drop of 5%, i.e. 38 tonnes, on Mercamadrid. The most significant drops were those in fresh tuna, fresh shortfin mako, fresh bullet tuna, fresh tope shark and fresh swordfish. The most important increases were those in fresh northern bluefin, fresh bigeye and fresh head-on tuna.

France

Volumes of northern albacore landed at French ports declined by 463 tonnes during August, compared with the previous one. The main ports were Lorient, Le Guilvinec and Boulogne/Mer.

Italy

Volumes landed at Italian ports during August increased in the case of Atlantic albacore and swordfish. That of bullet tuna declined. Aci Trezza was the main port of these landed volumes.

Prices

Prices of skipjack were between USD 2,150/t CFR and USD 2,200/t on the market of Bangkok at the end of September.

Spain

The prices of yellowfin for the canning industry remained at EUR 3,560/t EXW Spain. Prices of skipjack tuna > 1.8-3.4 kg are between EUR 1,800/t and 1,850/t CFR Bangkok.

On Mercabarna, in August, the onle rise was registered in frozen whole tope shark, due to the higher demand. The prices of the rest of tunids and squaliform species declined. The most significant drops were those in fresh shortfin mako, as a consequence of a rise in supplies. There followed the drops in fresh tope shark, fresh northern albacore, fresh southern albacore, fresh tuna and fresh swordfish, all due to the lower demand.

On Mercamadrid, in August, prices declined in frozen swordfish, fresh tuna, fresh albacore and fresh swordfish. That of the rest remained stable.

France

The average price of northern albacore volumes was up EUR 0.34/kg at French ports, due to a higher demand.

Italy

On Italian first-sale markets prices of Atlantic albacore and picked dogfish declined. That in bullet tuna increased and the price of swordfish has not changed.

2. NORTH AMERICA

Swordfish (Xiphias gladius)

Prices

The average CIF price of headless and/or fresh gutted swordfish (HS 0302670090, former 0302692049) at US Customs in July was USD 8,865/t. This figure is up 2% on that of the previous month and down 8% on that of July 2016. During the first seven months the average was USD 9,263, down 3% on those of the same period in 2016.

Markets

In July, US imports of fresh swordfish reached 876 tonnes, worth USD 7,766,000 CIF declared at Customs.

These figures are up 15% in volume and 17% in value on those of the previous month and down 1% in volume and 9% in value on those of July 2016.

In the first seven months, imports reached 3,741 tonnes and USD 34,653,000, down 15% in volume and 18% in value on those registered last year.

The main suppliers of fresh headless and/or gutted swordfish during the period were Ecuador, Brazil and Costa Rica with 851, 643 and 331 tonnes respectively.
