This market report focuses on catch volumes and harvests of live eel and Japanese eel in the Far East. We deal with aspects such as catch volumes, prices and imports.

Eel (Anguilla anguilla and Anguilla japónica)

Prices

At Japanese Customs, the average price for live eels in Jne 2015 was JPY 2,669/kg, up 2% on that of the previous month and down 17% on that of June 2014. In the first six months, the price has averaged JPY 2,499, down 37% on that of the same period in 2014.

During the same month, the processed eels reached an average price at Customs of JPY 2,667/kg, up 2% on that of the previous month and 8% on that of June 2014. During the period they averaged JPY 2,627, down 4% on those of 2014.

Markets

Imports of live eels for consumption during the analysed month totaled 706 tonnes and JPY 1,884 million, up 25% in volume and 28% in value compared with the previous month. They were up 157% in volume and 112% in value on those of the same month in 2012, according to preliminary figures provided by Japan Customs.

During the year, imports of the product from China grew 42% in volume and dropped 13% in value compared with those of the previous year, while those of Taiwan rose 308% in volume and 175% in value.

Imports of processed products in the month reached 2,543 tonnes, worth JPY 6,782 million, up 2% in volume and 4% in value on those of the previous month. Compared with June 2014 they were up 144% in volume and 163% in value.

During the six months, imports of processed products from China grew 65% in volume and 56% in value on those of 2014.
