During 1976, Nippon Suisan Kaisha Ltda. Of Japan, looking for new sources of marine products, began in Chile, with the corresponding legal authorizations from the fishing and maritime authorities, the location of fishing grounds located in the southern part of the Chilean Sea, which could be used to take advantage of the resources of the southern demersal fishery until now unexplored, which would be a source of food and returns of export foreign currency, assigning the ship factories "Kirishima" that began its work in the south of our country.

Thus, the story of the birth of the Chilean Fisheries Development Company begins to be woven, which would be made up of Japanese and Chilean capital as a joint venture. Whose birth takes place on October 11, 1978, having in its inventory two factory ships: the B / F -Kirishima "and the B / F Fuji", with a base port in Valparaíso. Later it also operates from Punta Arenas. As of that date, the integration of the crews by Chileans and Japanese also begins.

Over the years, the factory ships with which the company was started are replaced by more modern ones adapted to technology and the conditions of the resources. Currently Emdepes owns 2 Factorías ships: the "UNZEN" and the "UNIONSUR" (Surimero) that displace around 5,000 TRG, with which the Company produces all its products.
